Welcome
to Pelican Pete's Wild Adventures |

This
month I went to visit some of my friends who are not feeling well.
They are staying at the Wildlife Rescue of Key West, at the Indigenous
Park across the street from Southernmost Beach or Higgs Beach.

|
Here
are some of my friends greeting me as I entered the hospital area.
These guys all have problems with their wings that makes it impossible
to fly. That is why they must stay here.
|
Here
are some more of my friends. The one on the right is an old timer,
you can tell from the different colors than those on the left. Notice
how brown is more pronounced with beautiful white and yellow accents.
These pelicans are also unable to fly. |

As
luck would have it, I made it just in time for lunch. The special
of the day was very appetizing dish consisting of minnows and
meal, yum!
A
true 5 starfish restaurant, a must if you are in Key West (and
a pelican).
|
Here
is a video of the wonderful dining experience.
This video may take several minutes to download,
so be patient.

Here
is a sad story, becoming all to common.
This
unfortunate pelican has lost most of it's top bill, most likely
the result of an act of cruelty by humans. Ironically this bird
must now depend on humans for it's survival. It must be fed
a special diet, by hand, for the rest of it's life. The nice
lady that feeds this bird said that most of the injuries to
pelicans are from encounters with fisherman's hooks and monofilament
fishing line.

Here
are some Redtail Hawks, they also cannot fly.

This
is the new addition to the animal hospital under construction.
|
well
that's it, I hope you learned something about what happens to
wild birds when we get hurt.
Thanks
to all the great humans at the Key West Wild Animal Rescue.
If you are in Florida, stop by and visit, we would love to see
you.
Your
friend, Pelican Pete.
